Today we have our very first guest! We have so much we can learn from other families and I’ll be able to share about many more places to explore so I'm excited to bring in guests. In this episode, we hear from my friend Rebecca who shares about her trip to Athens, Greece with her son and parents. She gives tips for planning and getting kids excited about the destination, strategies for structuring the days, and why she loves local guided tours for multigenerational travel.

Pre-trip learning about Athens for kids

  • Percy Jackson Books by Rick Riordan: Introduce your kids to this exciting books series that incorporates so much Greek mythology.
  • Greeking Out Podcast: An entertaining and educational kids podcast (but fun for adults too!) all about Greek mythology.
  • See what books your local library has.

Where to stay in Athens with kids

  • Hera Hotel: This hotel was perfect for Rebecca's family because it is very convenient to the main tourist sites and includes breakfast. Their website shows rooms that can accommodate a family of 4, as long as one child is still 5 years or younger.

What to do in Athens with kids:

  • Acropolis/Parthenon: A guided tour here really helps the history come alive!
  • Roman Forum and Athenian Agora: Rebecca recommends walking here and seeing all of the history along the way. It's a 13 minute walk from the Acropolis museum
  • Monastiraki Flea Market: The actual flea market is only on Sundays but visit any day for art and souvenirs.
  • The Christmas Factory at Technopolis: A special Christmas kids experience with face painting, games, souvenirs, carnival rides, and holiday lights.
  • Syntagma Square:  see the changing of the guard every hour
  • Museum of Ancient Greek Technology: includes around 300 operating models of ancient Greek inventions - engaging for all ages and a surprise trip highlight for Rebecca's family.

Where to eat in Athens with kids:

  • Greek Stories: This was a great quick spot for the family to get dinner close to their hotel on the 1st night
  • Two lunch options on the walk from the Parthenon and past the Roman Forum: Erato (chicken souvlaki/kebab) & Diogenis (has a kids menu)
  • Mani Mani: Their family enjoyed a fancy meal here for a special night out
  • The Salad Project: Light soups, salads, fish
