Let's go to Spain! Listen in to hear all about traveling to Barcelona and Madrid with a family of 4. My friend Sammy joins us to tell us how they picked Spain, found a hotel that allows a family of 4, and how she finds the best family-friendly spots for her family to soak up the history and culture and enjoy the delicious cuisine of Spain.

Here are their favorite tours plus scroll to the end for some helpful tips!

Barcelona Tuk Tuk Tour: This was the perfect 1st day tour to get acquainted with Barcelona.

Paella Making in a Secret Garden: Almost sounds too good to be true but it's real! Prepare this traditional Spanish dish in a group - so there's a role for even the smallest chefs! - all while chatting with other travelers in a beautiful garden.

Soccer Match: See a Barca soccer match with a local! Learn the team history and cheers, and enjoy stadium snacks that are pretty elevated compared to the US :)

Flamenco Show: Our friends said this was a great balance of a traditional show while still welcoming to (polite :) ) kids. Bring quiet coloring or restaurant games along just in case!

Luminiscence: A stunning light show in a basilica! Some nights there's a live choir but Sammy said her family loved it even with the recorded music.

Hammam: The beautiful hammam in Madrid that Sammy found after their hotel pool was closed.

Hotels:

Alma Barcelona: This hotel allowed a family of four in one room and has a pool plus a dreamy courtyard for pre-dinner cocktails and family games.

Pestana Collection Plaza Mayor: This hotel's location right on Plaza Mayor was a perfect base for Madrid! It also has a pool, though it was closed for part of the family's stay.

Sammy's Tips:

  • Book a hotel with a pool so you can take an afternoon break and reset before going back out for dinner
  • On the 1st day, schedule a sightseeing tour for an overview of the city. It helps you get your bearings and see where you'd like to spend more time
  • With little kids, pick 1 main morning activity, and play the afternoon by ear
  • Join a country-specific Facebook group to learn tips for traveling there with kids
  • Check out AirBnB experiences for cool local tours and experiences like the soccer game or paella class
